What Spills Out When Our Paths Cross?
God does not place us in other people’s lives by accident. Every meeting can become an opportunity to listen, to care, and to share the hope we have in Jesus.
Imagine walking through a crowded room with a full cup of coffee. Someone unexpectedly bumps into you, and coffee spills over the rim.
Why did coffee spill out? The obvious answer is, “Because someone bumped into me.” But the deeper answer is even simpler: Coffee spilled out because coffee was what the cup contained. If the cup had contained water, water would have spilled. If it had contained juice, juice would have spilled.
The same is often true of our hearts.
Every day, our lives bump into the lives of others. Some encounters are pleasant and expected. Others are inconvenient, uncomfortable, or painful. Yet these meetings are not meaningless accidents. God places people along our paths and places us along theirs. He gives us opportunities to listen, encourage, comfort, serve, forgive—and sometimes to speak about the hope we have in Jesus.
What spills from us?
Sometimes impatience spills out. Sometimes anger, worry, pride, criticism, or self-interest comes pouring over the edge. These moments reveal how much we need the very gospel we hope to share. We are not naturally perfect witnesses. We are sinners who need forgiveness every day.
But that is precisely why our hope is so precious.
Our hope does not rest on our ability to say everything perfectly. It does not depend on our having flawless lives. Our hope rests entirely on Jesus Christ. He lived perfectly in our place. He carried our guilt to the cross. He rose from the grave and conquered death. Because of him, our sins are forgiven, we have peace with God, and eternal life is ours as a gift.

Before Peter tells us to speak, he points to what fills the heart: Christ as Lord.
When Christ and his promises fill our hearts, his gospel is ready to spill into the lives of others. It may happen through a gentle word spoken to someone who is grieving. It may come through patient listening when a neighbor is struggling. It may be a simple explanation of why we are not afraid of death, why we can forgive, or why we still have hope when life hurts.
Sharing the gospel does not mean forcing a conversation or treating another person like a project. Peter reminds us to speak with gentleness and respect. We care about people because Jesus cares about them. We listen because their burdens matter. We speak because the good news of Christ is too precious to keep hidden.
You may never know why God allowed your path to cross someone else’s. Perhaps that person needs encouragement. Perhaps you need to receive encouragement from them. Perhaps God is opening a door for the name of Jesus to be spoken at exactly the right moment.
So fill your heart with God’s Word. Return daily to the promises of Christ. Drink deeply from the good news of forgiveness, resurrection, and eternal life.
Then, when your life bumps into another life, let it be the gospel that spills—from one forgiven heart into another.
